Pemberton Manor A place where misfits fit in, where normal is overrated, and where hope - and love - spring eternal.

The Moon Mother

Lucy Farnsworth is running for her life…and for the lives of her babies, too. When the neighbor in the apartment below hers reports her for disturbing the peace, Lucy is terrified of the attention she’s getting, of what the good folks at Pemberton Manor might learn about her past. But on the night of the first full moon of the new year, every wall she’s worked so hard to build comes crashing down around her, and Lucy finds sanctuary in the most unlikely of places, and help from the most unlikely of people.

Pemberton Manor is as out of place in Southern California as its residents seem to be. But if home is where the heart is, then this English estate planted amidst orange groves and palm trees, deserts and beaches, and converted into ten charming apartments, is the perfect place to hang a hat. Fall in love with the quirky bunch of characters who call Pemberton Manor home, but be warned. Once you set foot inside these doors, you may never want to leave.

Pemberton Manor The Moon Mother is a clean and wholesome short story in a series about family life, sweet romance, first love, and second chances. If you enjoyed Becky Doughty's Elderberry Croft Collection, you'll feel right at home with the folks at Pemberton Manor.

The beginning of the Serial Novel called Pemberton Manor hit it out of the park.
The prequel starts with a few of the cast of characters getting stuck in the elevator. This starts a friendship. This episode is about two of those characters, the very pregnant Lucy, and her little daughter, Itsy.
It's called The Moon Mother, and I had stop to think about what that meant. Then I realized, Lucy goes into labor on the full moon.
Prior to that we learn a lot about this very interesting woman, about her teen years as an unwed mother who is basically disowned by her parents, about her struggle to live, and about being taken in by a controlling, abusive man who she is now running from, and once again struggling.
The events around her water breaking, and a scary events to follow all leave you not being able to put it down. Very well written.
My take away from this is grace! Lucy has made some friends like she's never had before, all of whom expect nothing in return. The last paragraph of this book really got to me. It is a perfect illustration of our relationship with Christ, who does and does for us, expecting nothing from us to earn this constant grace. But our gratitude for His grace and mercy compels us to offer all we are and all we have.
Great start, and now I'm looking forward to learning about another one of these wonderful characters!

The Moon Mother A Pemberton Manor Short Story #2 edition by Becky Doughty Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The Moon Mother, the first true episode of the Pemberton Manor series, is a short and very satisfying novella. The prequel (Pemberton Manor The Goodbye Girl A Serial Novel - The Prequel) introduced the setting and some of the characters. This episode about Lucy is interesting and well-written. We get to know some of the characters better and are introduced to new characters in the community.

Moon Mother will appeal to anyone who appreciates well-spun stories with compelling characters. Because it is part of a serial novel, it would be best to read the episodes in order.
I absolutely love Becky Doughty as an author, and this series does not look to disappoint. I read the prequel (The Goodby Girl) and then this is the first in the series. Becky engages the reader immediately and we get to know characters well within a few pages. I read this beginning to end in about two hours, yet felt like the characters were developed and I was fully engaged in the story. I am really looking forward to the rest of the series! If you like hopeful stories that let you remember that there are good people in the world who are scarred and imperfect then this is the series for you!
Lucy Farnsworth is in rather dire straits, but she's determined to protect and provide for herself, her young daughter, and her unborn baby. However, when a fellow resident of Pemberton Manor reports a disturbing incident at Lucy's apartment, it could put her desperate situation on blast in Pemberton Manor The Moon Mother by author Becky Doughty.

And here I am, a reader who doesn't "do" serial novels until she has all the episodes, going along on this Pemberton Manor journey strictly because she trusts this author. The prequel, The Goodbye Girl, certainly whet my appetite for this first episode, and I wasn't disappointed.

There's something endearing about this manor, this apartment building full of misfits, even though I haven't met all the misfits yet. Even in Lucy's weakness, her courage is evident. And, seriously, the way she conducts herself in the midst of the mess she's in had me calling her Wonder Woman—as I'm sure motherhood has a way of revealing the Wonder in many a Woman.

I've found such a richness and realness in much of this author's writing, and this installment of Pemberton Manor is no exception. It's with all virtue of patience (and anticipation!) that I'm looking forward to the next episode.
Lucy moved to Pemberton Manor a few months ago to keep herself, her young daughter Itsy, and her unborn son safe from an abusive man; when she gets some threatening messages, a series of miracles combine to keep them all safe as they welcome baby Ollie into the world.

(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)

Plot and Setting 4.8 -- Plot is engaging from start to finish. Has many unique elements, no major holes, and a sense of focus. Setting is clear and believable. Timeline may be a bit hard to follow. This a quick little snippet of a story, but it packs a lot of punch. I loved the series of strange happenings, each apparently a complication as they come, but which ended up feeling miraculous and life-saving. The timeline was just a tad confusing, as some of the clues pointed to it being late January, and other pointed to February. Not a huge deal.

Characters 5 -- Relatable, realistic, interesting, dynamic characters. Even minor characters have depth, as do the relationships between characters. Lucy feels like a very real person. She has been through a lot, but has mostly allowed tough circumstances to make her stronger, not tear her down. She's an excellent mother, and a strong woman. The other characters who star briefly in this one also have great depth, and make me want to know more about them. I was particularly delighted by Sean. The prequel left me with an unmitigated poor opinion of him, but this story shows a deeper, kinder, smarter side of him. Sean the bookworm, who knew? Love it!

Mechanics and Writing 4.5 -- A handful of typos, punctuation issues, or word errors. (<15/100 pgs) None of the errors seriously hinder understanding. Intelligent use of POV. Skillful writing that adds to the story. Errors include compound word confusion, mild punctuation or formatting issues, very minor typos. POV is all 3rd person Lucy.

Redeeming Value 4.8 -- Well-developed, central, uplifting themes. Drugs, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified at all. No explicit sex scenes. Implied moral guidelines for behavior. This book itself is quite clean, though we do hear some about the less-than-stellar choices Lucy made in the past, motivated by the need to survive. Her determination to raise her children in a safe place is admirable, as is her bravery in turning her back on a lucrative, though skeevy, career. A good lesson in relying on friends--and choosing friends who offer help and support out of genuine caring, not for what they can get from you in return.

Personal Enjoyment 5 -- I loved it. It made me feel in all the best ways, and leaves me content and satisfied. One I'll definitely read again.
