Beginning with the Gospel parable of the talents – which were buried in the ground by some, and multiplied by others – Kevin Vost here unearths a treasure for those who are struggling to live a life of Christian virtue the ten particular talents that God has given each of us as our own . . . to bury . . . or to multiply for our own good and the good of the Kingdom.
Guided especially by St. Thomas Aquinas, one of the Church’s greatest teachers, as well as by Fathers of the Church and the example of many saints, Vost explains how you can discover, understand, and perfect each of your own ten talents.
In the process, you will develop your noble ability to reason, strengthen your faculties of mind, perfect your physical capacities for beauty of form and grace, nurture your ability to act angelically, and prepare yourself to live that life which is proper to a being made in the image of God.
Do you know what your ten talents are? Do you know what God wants you to do with your life? As He gave ten talents to each of the souls in the parable, so He has given ten particular talents to you. Don’t ignore them any longer, or leave them buried.
Let Kevin Vost help you unearth them, and show you how to multiply them a hundredfold.

Unearthing Your Ten Talents edition by Kevin Vost Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Dr. Kevin Vost's books have been a source of inspiration and personal challenge since I first discovered them a few years ago. His balanced approach to life, of developing body mind and spirit, is encouraging and mirrors my own journey to find wholeness in life. Jesus said "I am come that they may have life and have it to the full," from John 1010. I believe that full is a balanced life, and Dr. Vost helps a reader to achieve that. In each of his books that I have read from Memorize the Faith to Fit For Eternal Life and now in this new volume Unleashing Your Ten Talents Kevin unlocks truths and then makes them available for those of us on the same journey.
In this book Dr. Vost begins with the Gospel parable of the talents, where some have been buried in the ground, and some, by others, multiplied. What Kevin Vost unearths here is a treasure for those of us who are struggling to live a life of Christian virtue. The ten particular talents that God has given each of us as our own are ours to either bury or to multiply for our good and the good of the Kingdom. The specific talents he exams are
Part I The Talents of Learning
1. Understanding . . . Understanding.
2. The Science of Science
3. Words of Wisdom
Part II The Talents of Living
4. Forging Fortitude.
5. Tempering Temperance
6. Justifying Justice
7. Practicing Prudence
Part III Talents of Loving
8. Fostering Faith
9. Harnessing Hope
10.Cherishing Charity
Vost opens these 10 talents to us beginning with St. Thomas Aquinas and then with many examples from saints throughout the ages. Vost explains how we discover, understand, and perfect each of our own ten talents. He will help us develop the ability to reason and strengthen our minds. He provides the tools needed to help us shape body, mind and spirit into a more noble structure, grounded in scripture and church history, but prepared to grow and move forward to serve the church and the world. He provides tools to help us develop and to live as we were intended as having been created in the image of God.
This book will help you answer these questions Do you know what your ten talents are? Do you know what God wants you to do with your life? And to learn how to live and mature in them and their use, Kevin will help take these deep theological and philosophical ideals and present them in such a way that you will be able to apply them. It is another excellent book by an author who uses his talents to help all of us improve.

Yesterday I finished reading "Unearthing Your Ten Talents A Thomistic Guide to Spiritual Growth" written by Kevin Vost. This book requires more than one reading. The first time you read it is just to become familiar with it's contents. The second time you read it, get out your notepad, highlighters and colored pencils. I believe this book will be a constant reference for anyone interested in spiritual growth. It doesn't just explain the virtues. It gives them a more in depth meaning that I had not been aware of in the past. The virtues are not redefined, but their meanings are so much deeper than I had ever realized. Mr. Vost proceeds to define the virtues in a whole new way, and then breaks them down into their componets with explanations. It took me quite a while to read this book. I had to really exercise my mental muscles. Once I had read a chapter, I had to stop and think about what I had read, review what I had read, and decide how to apply what I had read to my spiritual growth. I found I had plenty of areas that needed reevaluating, even areas in my life that I had thought I had taken authority over. This book is an occasion of learning and growing. It will be in my backpack for quite a while, my copy will eventually be highlighted and underlined, with notes in the margins. Don't all good books end up this way? Sophia Intitute Press sent me a free copy of this book for me to review. Mr. Vost has also written a book on memory, I have a copy, I will dust it off, and read it. He has also written a book about physical fitness. Understand one thing, I am not an authority in knowledge and learning, I am simply an ignorant redneck hick that has been impressed by a good book.
In "Unearthing Your Ten Talents A Thomistic Guide to Spiritual Growth," Dr. Kevin Vost eloquently and practically interprets the Angelic Doctor's definition of each of ten virtues, including the virtues (talents) of learning (including understanding, science/knowledge, and wisdom), the virtues of living (cardinal virtues of fortitude, prudence, temperance, and justice), and the virtues of loving (theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity).
As Dr. Vost explains each virtue in terms of characteristics or qualities, he also offers us a corresponding vice of excess and vice of deficiency, as well as corresponding Beatitudes, spiritual fruits, and Sacraments (which can be found in a handy table as an appendix). This connection is brilliantly organized and explained to the reader, who will be challenged but heartened by how he/she can grow in the interior life.
In the final chapter, Dr. Vost offers several steps toward practicing virtue in one's daily life, which can be implemented immediately. "Unearthing Your Ten Talents" is a hidden spiritual treasure, because it digs deeper into each virtue and incorporates humor and relevant examples of how the reader may gain greater insight into oneself through honest self-appraisal. As a psychologist, Dr. Vost also offers the reader a subtle (but present) psychological perspective into how virtuous living translates into our relationships with others.
"Unearthing Your Ten Talents" is must-read for anyone who is seeking to grow in his/her understanding of the Thomistic virtues and can be read by novices and veterans in theology alike. A practical book for practical living, "Unearthing Your Ten Talents" is perfect to be used in daily prayer, meditation, or as part of one's spiritual reading.
Very good for growing in virtues!
