Red Planet Book 2 Friends and Foes Eddie Pittman 9781419723155 Books Reviews

****/5 stars for this book. Packed full of adventure, this graphic middle grade novel, is one I’d recommend to my fourth graders! Red and a random lot of aliens are stranded on a planet with limited supplies. There is a power struggle between Red and Goose (the one “left in charge” and hoarder of “said supplies”). They decide to have an election to battle for who should be the next leader. I loved how action-packed this story was but felt like the election sequence was a bit long. I did not read the first book in this series and would definitely be interested in checking it out. There is an underlying message of empathy and acceptance through Red and Goose’s relationship. They can accomplish a lot if they work together. The graphics of the book definitely do not disappoint. I could see this easily becoming a morning cartoon series that kids would definitely tune into and enjoy! The ending of the book left me curious about what’s to come next. I would recommend this book to my students, especially with how the illustrations do such a phenomenal job of storytelling!
Red’s Planet 2 Friends and Foes, by Eddie Pittman is a creative and entertaining graphic novel. I admit that I was skeptical when I first saw this book, as I am not typically a graphic novel fan, but I read this book anyway, and enjoyed it. I was impressed with the fun, vivid illustrations and strong, original characters. Red, a spunky, creative human is stranded on a foreign planet. She and her fellow space creatures are trying to make do with their surroundings, and are under the rule of an apathetic and selfish governor. Red is not going to let him continue his tyranny, and she decides to challenge him in an election. Will Red succeed? I guess you’ll have to read the book to find out.

Bottom line This book is visually exceptional and the story and characters are really fun. Whether you're a kid or an adult, it should be on your shelf.

Both books in the Red's Planet series (and I hope there are many more to come) have been wonderful, in the actual sense of the word. His work genuinely produces wonder in the reader. As with book one, Friends and Foes is obviously well thought out, witty, and provides an excellent balance between the pace and depth of the story. It keeps you interested, but doesn't fly by opportunities so fast that you wonder what you've read. Even the ending of this particular book is satisfying, but you're still wondering about what happens after the last page. It leaves you wanting more. And, best of all, its actually funny. Not overwhelm-you-with-gratuitous-jokes funny, or peppered-with-cliches-or-bad-pun funny, but rather the kind of funny that is appropriate, creative, and well timed.

I can't think of a character that isn't well placed or enjoyable. Whether its Red, Goose, Tawee, or even one of the many outlying characters, no one is unnecessary or awkward. The main characters themselves are immediately lovable and their personalities are definitely memorable, like they belong in your life somehow.

Eddie's vivid use of color and the form of his particular art is, without hyperbole, stunning. The guy obviously knows what he is doing. The richness of his work is evident on every. Single. Page. It is clear he has a laser-like attention to detail and great overall vision. Kids will be amazed and their imaginations will probably take off for a while to come. Adults, funny enough, maybe even more so.

Pittman has accomplished something special. I'm not an expert in the genre by any stretch, but I reckon he (and Red's Planet) should be acclaimed alongside the other great comic artists and their works.

I can't wait for Book Three.
In the previous graphic novel for kids by a talented Disney artist, a parentless red-headed girl is taken from the planet Earth and ends up on a strange planet full of displaced aliens also snatched (by accident?) from various parts of the universe.

Now this fearless kid has to confront a selfish old blue-furred lion who is stubbornly hoarding emergency supplies so she and her stranded extraterrestrial companions will have something to eat. Then it turns into a bizarre "political" competition between the plucky young heroine and the aged sourpuss to see who would govern the lost little band on this far-off planet.

This impromptu campaigning part is obviously reminiscent of a strange old vintage comic strip where talkative little swamp creatures suddenly meet fearsome villains wearing grotesque-looking caricature masks of human political figures being lampooned at the time.

The story itself is skillfully drawn as usual with very lively cartoon-like characters gathering together to play ball and tell bittersweet stories over the comforting campfire, thus helping their bonding gradually grow warmer over the time. And there are also even more funny "Easter Egg" details slyly planted here and there near the ending of the book especially for older readers to spot, of course.

Not to mention a few heartfelt surprises at the climax, too!

So I look forward to what will happen in the third book, which may conclude the whole space adventure and tie up everything involved as well.

Oh, and one more thing...I am glad to see an obscured figure (right above Goose's left hand on page 185 and no, I'm not talking about George Jetson) alive and well. So I wish that little guy a safe journey back to the swamp, of course.
Fun book! My kids read it over and over.
