Messenger A Walt Longmire Story A Penguin Special from Viking Walt Longmire Mysteries edition by Craig Johnson Literature Fiction eBooks

I'm a big Craig Johnson fan, but this new publisher's strategy of releasing e-stories between novels sometimes feels a bit like a scam. Sometimes the stories (like Barry Eisler's) are truly stand alone. And sometimes, like this one, they appear as the first chapter in the next book (The Serpent's Tooth). So you wind up buying the story twice. It's a good story, and it whets the appetite. But still...

Messenger A Walt Longmire Story A Penguin Special from Viking Walt Longmire Mysteries edition by Craig Johnson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Craig Johnson never disappoints and this is reassuring to me, as a fan. I have read all the books and delight in the TV series as well. Walt Longmire is a true Western hero, in today's Wyoming. His interaction with Henry Standing Bear and others on the reservation nearby is presented with affection and deep respect for the Native American culture. We learn much about the reservation life, the life of the people who live in this vast and beautiful state of Wyoming. These stories are mysteries with a heart and there is a feeling of peace and serenity about the descriptions of the land that is present in all the books. Thank you, Mr. Johnson, for giving readers someone they can like, respect and admire warts and all. Even thought this was a "special" installment of the Longmire series, it still had all the quality and enjoyment of the series books. Please keep them coming, Walt is a good friend and a truly good read.
Such a sweet story. I really hope Johnson winds in the Cheyenne folklore because it is truly folklore and not just a part of the fiction. I hope that if I every run into a Cheyenne and for some reason this "messenger" is brought up, that it's real. That the person I'm talking to doesn't say something like, "Oh, you must've read Craig Johnson's Longmire series. Yep. He's got quite an imagination." The dialog between the characters is wonderfully light and so real. You can hear these things being said between friends and co-workers and strangers. His physical descriptions of the characters brings them to life for me. Johnson has a wonderful sense of humor and usually at no one's expense.
Craig Johnsons' usual great writing and a funny story, but very short. I knew this was not a full-length novel, but was shocked when the story ended on Location 423 of 706, or just 59% of the way through the book. The remainder was the first chapter of "A Serpent's Tooth." So almost half the publication is just a promo for another book. Had I known this, I would not have purchased it.
Anyone interested in a good laugh, needs to read this book! I laughed until I had tears in my eyes. The story is so vivid in it's descriptions of the events that take place that is almost as good as watching it on TV. Craig takes you to a tourist wilderness park area where the "facilities" are familiar to all who have visited such areas. However, only Craig could come up with the events that take place in the outdoor toilet. Picture Walt and the Bear holding Vic upside down, and lowering her into the "vault" to take a look-see. This is about all I will let you would-be readers in on. Let me assure you that there are many other events that take place along with this episode that will make you say "Oh, no"!!!!

The only thing I find "not so good", is the fact that it is not long enough. The pages disappear all to quickly, and I would like to reprimand Craig Johnson for not giving us more! So please Craig, if you don't mind, more pages next time.

Reading the Longmire series is like spooning down your favorite Baskin-Robbins ice cream, but I mean a HEAPING HELPING DISH. After all, "We all scream for ice cream", and we all should scream for more Craig Johnson and more LONGMIRE series, and long live the A&E TV series. Hope this is helpful to does seeking a good laugh, and an enjoyable time with our unflappable sheriff and Vic and The Bear. Thank you Craig Johnson and please keep them coming, but remember more pages!

First Sentence It was one of those late summer days that sometimes showed up in early October after a killing front--warm, dry, and hazy; Indian summer.

Sheriff Walt Longmire, best friend Henry Standing Bear, and undersheriff Victoria Moretti are returning from a day of fishing. A distressed call from park ranger Chuck Coon leads them to find Coon and a tourist trapped on top of a campground Porta Potty, having been driven there by a large black bear sow and her cubs. Inside, also trapped, is a special creature who may be a special Messenger for Walt.

It takes a special author whose short stories equal the quality of his full-length novels. Johnson is just such an author. All of the elements of an excellent book are here. He draws you in from the first sentence with evocative descriptions and establishes a sense of place that makes you part of the story.

Johnson has created such wonderful characters in Walt, Henry and Victoria (Vic). Even in this short-story format and had you not read a previous book, they are fully developed; you know who they are and their relationships to one another. Each character's personality, as well as the affection between them, is very evident.

One of Johnson's greatest strengths is dialogue. The spoken dialogue is crisp, very natural, and further establishes each character. The internal narrative places us in Walt's head and allows us to see the story from his perspective. There is excellent balance between the narrative and the dialogue. Both also allow us to enjoy Johnson's humor.

Learning about the beliefs of the Cheyenne is fascinating. Even more, it takes what could have been a simple and delightful story, and gives it depth and import on Walt's life. It gives us, the reader, a bit of education, and greater respect and sense of wonder for one of nature's glorious creatures.

"Messenger" is a wonderfully original story with humor, mysticism and friendship. While you may wish it had been longer, you'll also appreciate that it is perfect, just as it is.

Two significant benefits of buying this e-book are that a portion of the proceeds goes to the Teton Raptor Center in Jackson, Wyoming, and that it also includes the first chapter of Johnson's next book, "A Serpent's Tooth".
