These days where one third of the world is being pulled in one direction by Judeo-Christian Fascism; and in another direction by Islamo-Fascism, and the rest in still another direction by a maximally disingenuous coalition of the Third world run out of the UN, one would be remiss not to look under every rock for a productive progressive idea. In search of one is why I bought this book.

In the introduction, the author describes this (her own) work as "messy," and after reading it, who am I to disagree with her? But "messy" is just the beginning. More importantly, it is also an unsophisticated analysis that rests on a foundation of "cute" and even at times "artful sloganeering" the kind that "we lefties" used a lot as substitute for serious analysis throughout the 60s and 70s. [No wonder we are still in the same spot we were 50 years ago?] And while all of this flailing at windmills leaves those who are sympathetic to progressive causes (as I am) with a warm fuzzy feeling, it is not serious analysis far from it in fact.

If we are to view Ms. Eisenstein's feminist approach as serious analysis, then the only safe handle we have is "results." What has the "white women's movement in America since 1971 wrought? Any objective observer reviewing the evidence as I have has no choice but to come away with the same answer "more of the same." There is no magic bullet under the current white run male paradigm, with or without white women's feminism. Hand wringing and artful sloganeering does not get us even to first base.

Let us be honest here, "white women's liberation La Americaine," (as say opposed to the European version of Simone de Beauvoir) has been little more than a Trojan Horse for the racist white male hero system. Armed with its refashioned (but still meaningless) slogans of democracy, equality, and (everyone's favorite) diversity, it takes center stage as if it is a full-fledged "counter movement." Yet, results show, even in the subtext of this book, that it is little more than a proxy for more of the same. It is more "Racist Texas swagger in drag." Poor and colored women are used blatantly as pawns to advance a non-existent cause, as was done repeatedly in this book. [How disingenuous. bell hooks must be tired of being used in this way. If she is not, I am tired "for her."]

Yes, yes, I get it that one can cover everything over with the sloganeering of capitalist warmongering and think that something new comes out at the other end. You can also shuffle the deck chairs on the Titanic? But that too is an illusion. The best way to understand why nothing comes out at the other end is to rephrase Sir Winston Churchill's comment about democracy The U.S. is perhaps the worse capitalist nation in the world, that is, except for (nearly) all the rest.

While Ms. Eisenstein makes a tasty homogenized hors de oeuvre out of all of the women of the world (the same as Hillary Clinton did in her China speech), both know that this is the height of being disingenuous Most of the rest of the world's feminists are exact carbon copies of those in the U.S. A small group of elitist women, carrying, just beneath their breaths and their consciousnesses, the banner of the local elite male paradigms.

One cannot get to where Ms. Eisenstein wants to go from here. Call the U.S. what you wish, and at times I have called it many things It is racism, not sexism that is the Rosetta Stone (or better yet, the Mother lode) of American culture. If one is going to use a trump card with which to beat the U.S. over the head, race is the more honest stick to use, not sexism. Feminism is just another silent ally of the "Cowboys and Cowgirls of the World Unite," faction, and I defy anyone using the present evidence to prove otherwise.
