FINAL DECISION: Incredibly enjoyable for readers open to fusion romances. This charming historical paranormal perfectly merges the genres to fashion a fairy tale about a former villain who can't help but fall in love (because of a love charm) with a woman he never would have chosen on his own.THE STORY: Megan Tavistock gets unexpectedly snared by a love spell which results in her ending up married to Grand Duke Alexander of Nvengaria. Alexander has been sent to England because he plotted against the Prince of Nvengaria. In England, Alexander is redeeming himself being running intricate plots to protect Nvengaria's interests. A widower with a young son, Alexander never thought to marry again, especially not an innocent like Megan, but when the love spell results in him ruining Megan, Alexander is determined to protect Megan and discover who is trying to plot against him.
OPINION: Ashley has a way with men who are handsome and unconventional. Here, Alexander is a man who has been isolated and alone. He doesn't have strong connections with people and sees his only value in intrigue and deception. Having been married and with a young son, Alexander remains essentially alone.
This book is inspired by the fairy tale of Beauty and the Beast and the inspiration is cleverly done without being a scene by scene repeat of the classic. Alexander is a man isolated and when the beautiful and innocent Megan comes into his life, Alexander is dazzled by her even as he tries to keep her at a distance.
The love spell works to bring these two together quickly and unexpectedly. Their first meeting is hot and passionate and I really liked how the love spell worked in the story. It is the catalyst that forces Megan and Alexander together so that they can spend time together working though their relationship.
The mix of genres really works in this book in a way that it didn't completely mesh in the first book in the series. The combination of paranormal and historical and fairy tale gives this book interest and heft and I just loved every page.
Like a true beauty, Megan transforms the beastly Alexander into a loving husband and father by the end of the book and allows his true self to be revealed.
WORTH MENTIONING: The Scot Egan MacDonald has a significant role and his story is up next.
CONNECTED BOOKS: The Mad, Bad Duke is the second book in the Nvengaria series. While this story can be read as a standalone, I think it is better having read the first book in the series so that readers can truly understand what a potential bad guy Alexander is.
STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.

The Mad Bad Duke Jennifer Ashley 9780843956078 Books Reviews
I love the writing of Jennifer Ashley and I really like this series. I especially like the Duke and how much he thinks he can control everything but finally realizes that by letting go he gets everything he did not know he wanted.
Love the fairy tale feel of these books. Enjoy how it was written. I am not a story spoiler so if you like hot males that have dark secrets and strong women that bring out the best in them and happy ever after. Then these books are for you.
This is a fairy tale set in the clutches of suspicion and fear for ones life and beliefs. It is also a love story similar to Beauty and the Beast. It is a tale of love, fear, murder, broken friendships and dreams. Enjoy how this author weaves it all together.
Alexander, Grand Duke of Nvengaria is a sumptuous hero. He is a powerful alpha male who is under the spell of a shy English miss. Megan has seen Alex from afar but has never been introduced. These two are absolutely steamy together.
A love charm brings these two together. Its spell is overwhelming and quite frankly the first time Alex and Megan meet is one of the most passionate scenes in the novel. I was hooked instantly. The intensity these two have for each other leaps off the pages.
Alex and Megan surrender to the love charm and begin a life together that is more than just romantic interludes. As ambassador to England, Alex must keep Nvengaria's interests in the forefront. He also is worried about time lapses in his memory and hopes that these events surrounding his memory loss cannot be used against him.
Megan must adjust to being an Ambassador's wife and finds ways to coax Alex into a relationship built on friendship and trust. She worries that when the charm wears off they will find themselves not even liking each other.
This book is a keeper. It is the first I have ever read by this author. Ms. Ashley has done an excellent job of character development. More importantly, she never forgot that the sweet chemistry between Alex and Megan is the crux of her novel.
I'm not going to retell that story here, that's what the description is for. I will say however, I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING! This is a great story. I know it can be read as a stand-alone story but I cannot recommend enough that you really should read the first book in the series to get the full on Alexander before he meets Megan. I loved, loved, loved it! Now I'm on to Book a 3.
The Mad, Bad Duke was hot, smexy fun despite the comma in the title. I am a sucker for tiny little European countries struggling to maintain their independence in the midst of 19th century power-mongering turmoil, especially when there's romance and magic involved. M,BD is a sequel to Penelope and Prince Charming, a novel based on the same basic elements. Fortunately these elements are combined in a quite different brew in M,BD. Alexander and Meagan (lotta Meagans in the Regency, whut?) were introduced in the earlier novel as the villain and the BFF of the heroine respectively. The ensuing kerfuffle seemed almost inevitable, but I was especially eager to read Alexander's story because he was a really intriguing villain. Even in the first book, he was impossible to quite hate and that sense of hidden depths pays off in fascinating ways.
I also enjoy the not quite scary magical elements, particularly the logosh critters and the sense that magic has its own purposes. I think of this kind of book as altered history, and I find it a great deal of fun. For the most part this story is Historical Romance Lite and has a low angst level. Readers of Sherwood Smith's Dobrenica series or Madeleine Robins's much angstier Sarah Tolerance series would probably enjoy this as long as they're okay with the spicy. While the latter two authors write fantasy, Ashley is writing romance as that term is currently understood, and it ain't the "sweet" variety. Anyway, it worked for me, and I kind of got a kick (hur hur) out of the cover.
